Robust Position Estimation by Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter without Integer Ambiguity Resolution in Urban Environments

This study proposes a centimeter-accurate positioning method that utilizes a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) without requiring integer ambiguity resolution in global navigation satellite system (GNSS) carrier phase measurements. The conventional positioning method employing a particle filter (PF) eliminates the necessity for ambiguity resolution by calculating the likelihood from the residuals of the carrier phase based on the particle position. However, this method encounters challenges, particularly in urban environments characterized by non-line-of-sight (NLOS) multipath errors. In such scenarios, PF tracking may fail due to the degradation of velocity estimation accuracy used for state transitions, thereby complicating subsequent position estimation. To address this issue, we apply Rao-Blackwellization to the conventional PF framework, treating position and velocity as distinct states and employing the Kalman filter for velocity estimation. This approach enhances the accuracy of velocity estimation and, consequently, the precision of position estimation. Moreover, the proposed method rejects NLOS multipath signals based on the pseudorange residuals at each particle position during the velocity estimation step. This process not only enhances velocity accuracy, but also preserves particle diversity by allowing particles to transition to unique states with varying velocities. Consequently, particles are more likely to cluster around the true position, thereby enabling more accurate position estimation. Vehicular experiments in urban environments demonstrated the effectiveness of proposed method in achieving a higher positioning accuracy than conventional PF-based and conventional GNSS positioning methods.


GNSS Odometry: Precise Trajectory Estimation Based on Carrier Phase Cycle Slip Estimation

This paper proposes a highly accurate trajectory estimation method for outdoor mobile robots using global navigation satellite system (GNSS) time differences of carrier phase (TDCP) measurements. By using GNSS TDCP, the relative 3D position can be estimated with millimeter precision. However, when a phenomenon called cycle slip occurs, wherein the carrier phase measurement jumps and becomes discontinuous, it is impossible to accurately estimate the relative position using TDCP. Although previous studies have eliminated the effect of cycle slip using a robust optimization technique, it was difficult to completely eliminate the effect of outliers. In this paper, we propose a method to detect GNSS carrier phase cycle slip, estimate the amount of cycle slip, and modify the observed TDCP to calculate the relative position using the factor graph optimization framework. The estimated relative position acts as a loop closure in graph optimization and contributes to the reduction in the integration error of the relative position. Experiments with an unmanned aerial vehicle showed that by modifying the cycle slip using the proposed method, the vehicle trajectory could be estimated with an accuracy of 5 to 30 cm using only a single GNSS receiver, without using any other external data or sensors.


Precise Distributed Satellite Navigation: Differential GPS with Sensor-Coupling for Integer Ambiguity Resolution

Precise relative navigation is a critical enabler for distributed satellites to achieve new mission objectives impossible for a monolithic spacecraft. Carrier phase differential GPS (CDGPS) with integer ambiguity resolution (IAR) is a promising means of achieving cm-level accuracy for high-precision Rendezvous, Proximity-Operations and Docking (RPOD), In-Space Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) as well as satellite formation flying and swarming. However, IAR is sensitive to received GPS signal noise, especially under severe multi-path or high thermal noise. This paper proposes a sensor-fusion approach to achieve IAR under such conditions in two coupling stages. A loose coupling stage fuses through an Extended Kalman Filter the CDGPS measurements with on-board sensor measurements such as range from cross-links, and vision-based bearing angles. A second tight-coupling stage augments the cost function of the integer weighted least-squares minimization with a soft constraint function using noise-weighted observed-minus-computed residuals from these external sensor measurements. Integer acceptance tests are empirically modified to reflect added constraints. Partial IAR is applied to graduate integer fixing. These proposed techniques are packaged into flight-capable software, with ground truths simulated by the Stanford Space Rendezvous Laboratory's S3 library using state-of-the-art force modelling with relevant sources of errors, and validated in two scenarios: (1) a high multi-path scenario involving rendezvous and docking in low Earth orbit, and (2) a high thermal noise scenario relying only on GPS side-lobe signals during proximity operations in geostationary orbit. This study demonstrates successful IAR in both cases, using the proposed sensor-fusion approach, thus demonstrating potential for high-precision state estimation under adverse signal-to-noise conditions.


Factor Graph Fusion of Raw GNSS Sensing with IMU and Lidar for Precise Robot Localization without a Base Station

Accurate localization is a core component of a robot's navigation system. To this end, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) can provide absolute measurements outdoors and, therefore, eliminate long-term drift. However, fusing GNSS data with other sensor data is not trivial, especially when a robot moves between areas with and without sky view. We propose a robust approach that tightly fuses raw GNSS receiver data with inertial measurements and, optionally, lidar observations for precise and smooth mobile robot localization. A factor graph with two types of GNSS factors is proposed. First, factors based on pseudoranges, which allow for global localization on Earth. Second, factors based on carrier phases, which enable highly accurate relative localization, which is useful when other sensing modalities are challenged. Unlike traditional differential GNSS, this approach does not require a connection to a base station. On a public urban driving dataset, our approach achieves accuracy comparable to a state-of-the-art algorithm that fuses visual inertial odometry with GNSS data -- despite our approach not using the camera, just inertial and GNSS data. We also demonstrate the robustness of our approach using data from a car and a quadruped robot moving in environments with little sky visibility, such as a forest. The accuracy in the global Earth frame is still 1-2 m, while the estimated trajectories are discontinuity-free and smooth. We also show how lidar measurements can be tightly integrated. We believe this is the first system that fuses raw GNSS observations (as opposed to fixes) with lidar in a factor graph.


A Neural Network Detector for Spectrum Sensing under Uncertainties

Spectrum sensing is of critical importance in any cognitive radio system. When the primary user's signal has uncertain parameters, the likelihood ratio test (LRT), which is the theoretically optimal detector, generally has no closed-form expression. As a result, spectrum sensing under parameter uncertainty remains an open question, though many detectors exploiting specific features of a primary signal have been proposed and have achieved reasonably good performance. In this paper, a neural network is trained as a detector for modulated signals. The result shows by training on an appropriate dataset, the neural network gains robustness under uncertainties in system parameters including the carrier frequency offset, carrier phase offset, and symbol time offset. The result displays the neural network's potential in exploiting implicit and incomplete knowledge about the signal's structure.
